Peter Chen, O.D., PhD

Dr. Peter Chen earned his MD in China from the medical school of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China. He then spent two years of his residencies in Forensic Medicine and Ophthalmology at Peking Medical University before he came to the United States to pursue a doctoral degree in biomedical research.

Dr. Chen earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the Medical College of Georgia and was one of the honor graduates from the class of 1998. He then joined the faculty of MCG to continue his research, and mentorship to the students from both schools of medicine and graduate studies. During his seven years of medical research in MCG, he teamed with some of the world-famous scholars, such as Dr. David Hess, Dr. James Carroll, and Dr. David Munn, to investigate the origin and mechanisms of the inflammatory cascades. He played a major role in discovering and studying the significance of NF-kB and ICAM-1 molecules during reperfusion injury following acute ischemic stroke. He has numerous articles published in world-class journals, such as Stroke, Neuroscience, and Clinical Ophthalmology.

Dr. Chen received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the SUNY College of Optometry. He has also completed a residency in Primary Care and Ocular Diseases. He is highly trained to manage refractive errors, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, and many chronic and acute ocular diseases. Dr. Chen is a Board-Certified optometrist and has also been very actively involved in many clinical researches. He is a member of the American Optometric Association, Georgia Optometric Association, and the American Biochemistry Society.

Dr. Chen enjoys spending time with his wife, daughter, and dog and enjoys swimming, running, and home improvement.
